Everything started 1982 in a small lake in Southern Germany. A former business-colleague persuaded them for a scuba-dive and and caused one of the most successful careers in the German Underwater-photography with it. Already at this time the Cornelis had the wish to photograph their experiences under water and before they bought the necessary dive-equipment they owned a underwater-camera. Soon on it they was successfully at Photo-competitions and got their first jobs from dive-magazines such as "tauchen" and "UWF". They traveled from Indonesia to the Red Sea, from the Maledives up to the Caribbean in order to produce travel-stories, nature-stories and pictures for advertisement. 1991 the Cornelis changed their occupation to underwater photo-journalists. In competition with the most successful underwater-photographers from the world, Cornelis reached 1992 the title of the Vice-world-master. In the same year they had a job on the Maldives and decided to stay for the next years. They established a comfortable Diving-School and because of their excellent foto-services, they got the reputation as the best center for underwater-photography on the Maldives.

To introduce Helmut Corneli to the connoisseurs of the underwater-photo-scene , it would be the same as to carry coconuts to the Maldives. The underwater-photographer which was born in Karlsruhe / Germany, is managing, together with his wife Barbara, the successfully Diving-school "Comfort Divers" on the Maldives. He knows "the empire of the thousand atolls" over and under water like his west-bag. With numerous publications for example the picture-books "Fascination Freshwater", "Mediterranean" and "Maldives", they showed impressively the spread of their photographic work. The Maldive-expert and many times awarded photographer grant us an insight in his extensive photo-archive.

In the coral-world of the Maldives exists a variety of species which surpasses even the tropical rain forests. The Portfolio of Barbara and Helmut Corneli shows a small excerpt from it with unique photos. In cooperation with the Cornelis and LTU (a german airline), has BBC-Wildlife developed a quite special trip : A underwater-workshop for beginners and advanced photographers. The experience Instructor-couple join the participants to the coral-world and give them an insight in the art of the underwater-photography.
